Our Personal Videos
We were fortunate to be able to watch a luau right from our hotel room on our first night on Maui... we also attended a luau on the Big Island. So I have a collection of short clips I took.

A traditional luau performance is a vibrant celebration of Polynesian culture. It typically features an imu ceremony (unearthing a roasted pig from an underground oven), a grand buffet of island cuisine, and a dramatic stage show of hula, Tahitian dances, and thrilling fire-knife performances.

The hula dance is an ancient Polynesian art form of storytelling that uses hand gestures, hip sways, and foot movements to represent stories, history, and the nature
of the Hawaiian islands
Art of Hawaiian Fire Dancing

While fire acts aren't native to ancient Hawaii,
they have become an electrifying staple of
modern Polynesian luaus.

The performances pay tribute to ancient warrior traditions, honor island folklore, and
serve as a thrilling symbol of
the broader Polynesian "Aloha spirit".

The centerpiece of luau fire acts is the Samoan Fire Knife Dance (or Siva Afi). It originated from the ancient Samoan ailao, a war dance
where warriors would spin, twist, and
throw their nifo oti (war clubs) to display their bravery, agility, and battle readiness before a fight

This video is a portion of the thrilling finale of Samoan fire-knife dancing.
