Haleakala is the world’s largest dormant volcano.
Haleakala means "House of the Sun" in Hawaiian.
The Drive up to Mount Haleakala was 45 minutes. Our day started
very early. After arriving and past the visitor center (at the end of the road), we found the overlook called Pu‘u‘ula‘ula or Red Hill.
It was still dark and walked using flashlights.
We had to anxiously wait a while, then we watched the sun emerge from above the clouds and the Earth's atmosphere. It was rising from the arid, Mars-like landscape of Haleakala Crater into a sea of clouds.
Viewing the sky and clouds change color above sea level is magical.
The sky changes from warm yellow to vibrant pink and orange. The temperature was near freezing with high winds.
